Second Place Defeat

Is achieving second place just as bad as losing? Well, to some people it is. Think for a second, do you ever remember those who came in second, or third? Most people do not. Second place to some is almost like a reminder that you were just one step short of first place. There are many examples of those who achieved great success in life for the things they accomplished, invented, or even events they won. For example, Amelia Earhart is a very familiar woman in history who everyone knows for being the first woman to fly across the world. Although does anyone remember who the second woman to fly across the world was? I do not think you can even find that in your history book! Then there’s Michael Phelps, an amazing swimmer who won eight gold medals! Although, again not too many people remember who won those eight silver medals to his gold do they? Also, take a Miss America pageant for instance the girls take months preparing and conditioning to win the contest, although there is only one winner. Of course there is a runner up but ever girl wants to be “Miss America” not “The Runner Up.” The winner of Miss America always gets publicity and exposed all over the world, but what does the runner up get? Certainly, not anything close to what Miss America does. Over the years second place has become not only an upset to many but the feeling of defeat and disappointment.

Okay. . .I see a battle coming up here. It's a three way battle: You, me, and PARAGRAPHS!!! I am attacking you this week while you write your first essay and we are going to tackle this issue until you paragraph at the right times without even thinking about it!

As for this--the point was to express that second place is really the first loser. BUT, consider HOW you express it.

For instance, how about you write about second place from this kid's journal (which is something Andrea did, kind of). It would be a first person approach to the "suckiness" of losing.

There are other ways, too. The issue is that the ideas here just exist on the surface. There is no description really. No humanity to feel the pain of losing. Those are two integral pieces to making this come alive.

Let's work on those three issues this week together with your essay. It starts by you picking a good topic, though.

I really liked your main idea and it went great with your picture. Also you did a good job relating the topic to people today and making it interesting.

I really liked the examples you used for your story. I felt as though they were very good examples and it made me think alot about how second place really is thought of. Good work i liked it alot.
